In elementary school, when Alex’s friends at the desks around him were struggling to understand the lesson, his default action was to lean in and lend a hand. No one asked him to, and he certainly didn’t possess any credentials at age 8; Alex has just always loved to help people.

With a deeply rooted passion for the outdoors, animals, living systems, and the connections between them, Alex always enjoyed his science classes most. He found he had a natural aptitude for math and the critical thinking skills that coincide with science-based learning. As such, he knew he wanted to find a path forward marrying science and helping others, and he did: a long-term career in medicine.

His rich listening skills serve him well in medical settings and the classroom as he seeks to understand other’s perspectives and concerns, then does all he can to mitigate frustrations and support breakthrough-moments in learning. He continues to teach, too, because he appreciates that we never stop learning, even as adults. Getting to see the look on someone’s face as they learn something new brings back his memories of when he was in their shoes and reminds him of the joy that learning can spark.
